Birthday Photos

Today’s photo post is a double whammy since both were taken on the same day, my birthday! Dante peered at the poster for the ambient music event at the Madrone Lounge in San Francisco, looked up at me, pursed his kitty lips, and narrowed his eyes in an expression that could only be taken one way.

“Ambient music? C’mon.”

Well, Dante, you’re one to talk about taste. You eat Buster’s puke.

You Don’t Live in a Police State? Guess Again.

I’m a bit tardy in posting this due to the holiday, but as it’s important to discuss it and will remain important to remember for years to come, I’m bringing it up again, even though some may unfortunately already feel it’s old news.

Apparently, someone within the Twin Cities local government felt it was within their rights to threateningly enter the homes of innocent people against whom they have no evidence of wrongdoing and proceed to terrorize said people at gunpoint and apparently a judge agreed with them.

Make no mistake, they were indeed terrorizing them. Speaking as someone who has been harassed by a group of police officers, I can tell you without hyperbole that it is terrifying to be forced to listen to the taunting jeers of those with unquestionable authority, especially when they’re armed. I can only imagine how much worse it would be if they forced their way into my home (where I generally hope to feel safe) dressed in riot gear, refused to show a warrant, handcuffed me while I stared speechless at the barrel of a semi-automatic weapon, and forced me to lie on the ground while they referred to each other as the “terminator” or the “exterminator”.

This is NOT a Republican issue and please do not do yourself the disservice of assuming it is. The point is that “democratically” elected officials have the power to do this and we do not believe we have the power to stop them. This is not the behavior of the governing body of a true democracy. This is the behavior of a state in which the government and the people are separate.

Please also do not make the mistake of thinking that this will not happen to you because you are law abiding. Again, there was no evidence against these people. Maybe you assume you will not be the victim of this kind of abuse because you do not put yourself in the position these people did by planning to exercise their rights to assemble and speak freely? Then I ask, are you willing to give up those rights? What happens when you do find yourself faced with a situation in which you feel you need to speak out?

These immoral raids only serve as a reminder that you’re safe, as long as you remain complacent.

What Flavor is Your Kool-Aid Fountain?

Today at work I noticed a number of sites in which folks would post a daily photo either of themselves showing how they change from day to day or of a particular item they happen upon during the course of the day. I’ve decided this is a good exercise, but that I would have a hard time keeping up with the daily uploads and commentary (because I can’t make a post without writing something and that something usually turns into a long something). Therefore, I will start by making a post each weekday with a photo, but not necessarily a photo from that particular day nor the recent past. Just a photo.

Blue. The answer is blue flavor. This here is the Kool-aid fountain we pass on our regular biking route to Palo Alto. I had speculated that it was perhaps that blue stuff that is used to clean toilets or neutralize outhouses, but then I saw someone let his dog drink out of it. Since then I prefer to assume it is Kool-aid. Unfortunately, that leads to a strong desire to drink from it myself while biking past on a hot day.

Shooting Crabs at the Pike Place Market

With so much going on, I’ve been slow in posting photos from our trip to Seattle back in June. We didn’t have much time so I spent most days visiting with friends rather than touring, but we did make it to the Pike Place Market and I’m certainly glad we did. It has the colors, patterns, and bustling people that make it a great place to snap some shots. Following are some of my favorites:

Zombies Are Popping up Everywhere!

As many of you know, and some of you may not know, Walking Shadow Theatre Company has a show in the MN Fringe Festival this year. Shakespeare’s Land of the Dead, A True and Accurate Account of the 1599 Zombie Plague, opens this Saturday, August 2 at Rarig Theatre.

Normally I would support my friends by purchasing tickets to the show and enjoying it, followed by enthusiastically cajoling everyone I know to go see it themselves. Since I am no longer living in MN and saddened by missing every show this year (Walking Shadow, Upright Egg, Live Action Set, Random Fringe shows featuring people I randomly know), I’ve decided to contribute instead in a more creative capacity.

Following is my contribution to the Minneapolis theatre community and is especially appropriate, I’d like to think, for Shakespeare’s Land of the Dead.
